BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Softball team used a pair of timely hits, while the pitching staff allowed just one run on five hits over 14 innings as the Retrievers swept a doubleheader against Maine on Saturday at The Diamond.
UMBC (19-13, 11-2 AE) took game one, 1-0, before a late rally gave them a 2-1 win in game two.
Courtney Coppersmith pitched a complete game shutout in game one, and then picked up the save in game two after pitching the final inning. Over eight scoreless innings of work, she struck out 14, walked two and allowed just two hits.
GAME 1:
- The Retrievers got on the board early, scoring the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) led off with a sharp single to left field and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. With two outs, Madison Wilson's (Abingdon, Md.) line single to left center plated Della Guardia.
- Coppersmith was dominant throughout, only allowing a two-out, third inning single. She walked one batter and fanned a dozen to improve to 4-2 on the season.
- The Black Bears would get a runner to second base in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the seventh, Maine put a runner in scoring position with just one out, but Coppersmith got a strikeout and a fly out to center field to end the game.
GAME 2:
- Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer
- Wilson worked a leadoff walk in the second, but UMBC couldn't cash in
- Maine threatened in the third after a one out error and a stolen base put a runner at second with one out
- Kya Matter (Dalmatia, Pa.) would sandwich a pair of strikeouts around a walk to escape
- The Black Bears got a one-out single in the fourth, but Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) and Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) combined to turn a nifty double play to end the inning
- UMBC finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth
- Riggs reached on an error and Coppersmith then reached first when she beat out a double play ball.
- After a fly out, Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) picked up the Retrievers first hit of the ball game with a bloop to shallow right center that allowed Coppersmith to get to third.
- Coppersmith then raced home on a wild pitch to tie the game
- Maine made a pitching change, and after Meghan Dempsey (Collegeville, Pa.) worked a full count walk, Della Guardia ripped an 0-1 pitch to the gap in right center to score Granzow from second and give UMBC the lead
- Maine got the leadoff runner on in the sixth on an error, but with one out, Matter got a strikeout and catcher Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) threw out the runner trying to steal to end the inning
- Coppersmith entered for the the seventh, and got the first out, but a full count walk followed by a softly hit single put two on.
- Coppersmith then struck out two pinch hitters to seal the victory and pick up her fourth save of the season
- Matter improved to 11-5 on the season as she allowed just the one run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking two in six innings of work
The two teams will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
