Former UMBC softball players Ashley Gray and Carla O’Rourke spent their summer playing for the Karlslund Eagles in Örebro, Sweden. Gray and O’Rourke join a growing number of Retrievers to play professionally overseas after using up their collegiate eligibility, including Megan Oursler in 2005, Amy Sadowl in 2006 and Lauren Nicholson in 2007.

BALTIMORE—UMBC senior infielder Dana Shepherd was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II University Division First Team for the third year in a row, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced last week. Shepherd now advances to the national ballot, where she will compete with members of each all-district first team for Academic All-America recognition.

ALBANY, N.Y.—Albany ace Leah McIntosh’s second straight shutout of the Retrievers knocked the fourth-seeded UMBC softball team (25-29) out of the America East Championships by a score of 4-0 Friday evening at Albany Field. Earlier in the afternoon, UMBC second baseman Jessica Vetock’s two-out single gave the Retrievers a 5-3 lead over No. 2 Boston University, and UMBC held on for the victory to eliminate the Terriers.

Gray, O’Rourke Continue Softball Careers in Sweden
Former UMBC softball players Ashley Gray and Carla O’Rourke spent their summer playing for the Karlslund Eagles in Örebro, Sweden. Gray and O’Rourke join a growing number of Retrievers to play professionally overseas after using up their collegiate eligibility, including Megan Oursler in 2005, Amy Sadowl in 2006 and Lauren Nicholson in 2007.
FORMER UMBC PITCHER AMY SADOWL PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY IN THE NETHERLANDS
Amy Sadowl’s senior season at UMBC was cut short. The pitcher from Horsham, Pa., made just eight appearances in 2006 before shoulder tendonitis shut her down for the next month, and she took the mound only six more times all year. So when she was presented the opportunity to play professionally in the Netherlands, extending her softball career for another four months, she jumped at it.

GRADUATING SENIOR MEGAN OURSLER OFF TO SWEDEN FOR SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUE
After years of schooling and education, the date of graduation from college sends individuals in different directions. For some graduates it is heading off on exotic trips and vacations while others jump right into the work force, putting their education to use. For graduating senior Megan Oursler it is continuing to do what she loves in playing softball and combining it with a chance to see a new part of the world as she is set to head to Sweden to play softball during the summer of 2005.
6/10/2008 Cavell Johnson Earns 2008 Male America East Conference Sportmanship Award CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The America East Conference named UMBC men's basketball player Cavell Johnson (Fort Washington, Md.) and Hartford track & field athlete Latasha Jarrett (Ellington, Conn.) its 2008 Male and Female Sportsmanship Award winners on Monday, June 9. Johnson and Jarrett are now automatically eligible for the NCAA Male and Female Sportsmanship Awards to be determined by the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct in July.
To be nominated, an individual or team must have demonstrated consistently the values of caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity and responsibility in his or her daily participation in intercollegiate athletics.

6/2/2008 Guard Chris De La Rosa To Transfer to UMBC Baltimore--UMBC Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe has announced that Chris De La Rosa has signed a grant-in-aid letter and will transfer to UMBC from Siena (N.Y.) College this fall. De La Rosa is as 5’9”, 165-lb. guard who competed in 33 of 34 games in his freshman season with the Saints in the 2007-08 campaign. He averaged 2.5 points per game for the 23-11 Saints, the 2007-08 champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
