Grand Slams from Evix and Coppersmith Highlight Saturday Split for Softball

Albany, N.Y. -- Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) each hit grand slams as the UMBC Softball team won 12-3 in six innings at UAlbany on Saturday.

The Retrievers dropped a tough, 2-1, decision in the second game.

Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.), who went 4-for-5 out of the leadoff sport in game one, put UMBC (16-12, 8-2 AE) on the board in the first when she scored on an error.

The Great Danes would pull ahead 2-1, but Coppersmith would blast a grand slam, her first homer of the season, in the third to put the Dawgs up 5-2. Coppersmith would hit a solo homer in the fifth to push the lead to 6-2, but the hosts responded back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3.

UMBC exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth, four of them came on Evix's grand slam. Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) added a sacrifice fly, and Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) concluded the scoring with an RBI single.

Kya Matter picked up the win to improve to 10-4 on the season after 5.1 solid innings of work. Amaya Carroll (Hanover, Md.) entered to pick up the final two outs of the game

Game two was tight throughout as a defensive miscue allowed UAlbany to take a 1-0 lead in the third. UMBC would tie it up in the sixth on a Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) RBI grounder that scored Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.), but UAlbany would score the winning run on a 2-out bloop in the bottom half of the inning.

Coppersmith fanned eight in only six innings of work in the hard luck loss. Evix had a pair of hits, while Stott and Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) had the other hits for UMBC.

The two teams will wrap-up the series tomorrow at noon
