Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and
Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) each hit grand slams as the UMBC Softball team won 12-3 in six innings at UAlbany on Saturday.
The Retrievers dropped a tough, 2-1, decision in the second game.
Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.), who went 4-for-5 out of the leadoff sport in game one, put UMBCÂ (16-12, 8-2 AE) on the board in the first when she scored on an error.
The Great Danes would pull ahead 2-1, but Coppersmith would blast a grand slam, her first homer of the season, in the third to put the Dawgs up 5-2. Coppersmith would hit a solo homer in the fifth to push the lead to 6-2, but the hosts responded back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3.
UMBC exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth, four of them came on Evix's grand slam.
Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) added a sacrifice fly, and
Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) concluded the scoring with an RBI single.
Kya Matter picked up the win to improve to 10-4 on the season after 5.1 solid innings of work.

Game two was tight throughout as a defensive miscue allowed UAlbany to take a 1-0 lead in the third. UMBC would tie it up in the sixth on a
Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) RBI grounder that scored
Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.), but UAlbany would score the winning run on a 2-out bloop in the bottom half of the inning.
Coppersmith fanned eight in only six innings of work in the hard luck loss. Evix had a pair of hits, while Stott and
Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) had the other hits for UMBC.
The two teams will wrap-up the series tomorrow at noon
