ALBANY'S FIRST HALF LEAD TOO MUCH FOR RETRIEVERS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL IN 64-44 DEFEAT

The UMBC women's basketball team closed out their America East regular season conference schedule on Saturday afternoon falling to the Albany Great Danes by a final score of 64-44. The Retrievers got 17 points from Anastasia Goncharova but could not overcome a 36-17 halftime deficit as they fall to 4-23 on the year and 4-14 in the America East. Albany improves to 12-15 on the season and 9-9 in conference play. The Retrievers fell behind by early as the Great Danes ran out to a 10-0 run fueled by two treys from Becky Ayers. The Retrievers responded with a 7-0 run as Matea Pender hit a trey to get the Retrievers on the board and Mariana Santos finished a backdoor cut with a layup as the Retrievers cut the lead to three, 10-7 with 13:53 remaining in the first half. The Retrievers, however, were held to just 10 points to finish the half as Albany stretch their lead into double digits and took a 36-19 lead at the break. UMBC had 13 first-half turnovers and went just 2-of-11 from three-point range. The Retrievers in the second half made a run at the Great Danes as Goncharova hit 11-straight points for UMBC as the Retrievers closed the gap to 12, 44-32. The Retrievers run was halted by two treys from Jen Schumacker off the bench as the Great Danes built their lead back up and took the 64-44 win. Goncharova's 17 was a game-high, tying Albany's Becky Ayers. Danielle Hutcheson for the Great Danes also finished in double-digits with 12 points. UMBC will play in the No. 7-10 game in the opening round of the America East Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 10 at The Chase Family Arena in Hartford, Conn.
