Seniors Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College), Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Sara Parkinson (Lancashire, England/Loughborough University) have been named to the 2009-10 America East Indoor Track and Field All-Academic teams, the conference announced Tuesday.

Sophomore Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) broke his own school record in the men's 500-meter dash and qualified for the finals as the UMBC men's and women's track and field teams finished Day 1 of the IC4A and ECAC Championships in Boston Saturday.

The UMBC women’s track and field team, picked to finish eighth in the conference, exceeded expectations and placed fifth in the 2010 America East Indoor Championships. Freshman Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), who placed third in the weight throw on Friday, earned gold in the shot put Saturday in Boston.

Senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) earned gold and broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run as the UMBC women’s track and field team completed first day action at the 2010 America East Indoor Championships. The Retrievers currently sit in fourth place with 19 points.

3/6/2010 Freshmen Shine, But Men's Basketball Season Ends in America East Quarterfinals West Hartford, Conn.—A pair of freshmen, wing Shawn Grant and post Adrian Satchell gave UMBC fans a promising glimpse of the future, but the seventh-seeded Retrievers dropped a 76-59 decision to second-seeded Vermont (23-9) in the quarterfinals of the 2010 America East Tournament. It was UMBC’s (4-26) first defeat to open tournament play since 2003-04, their first season in the conference.

Academy) earned America East Third Team All-Conference honors, while freshman post Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, it was announced at the conference’s awards reception at the University of Hartford. The seventh-seeded Retrievers meet second-seeded Vermont at 6:00 p.m. in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday.

The two league rivals meet at the U. Hartford’s Chase Family Arena in the third quarterfinal contest, which will be played at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The winner will advance to take on the winner of No. 4 Maine vs. No. 5 New Hampshire on Sunday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. All the action of UMBC basketball will be available on the Retrievers’ flagship station, Fox 1370 AM (www.fox1370.com) with Gary Stein on the call.
