Women's Tennis Debuts at Home with 5-2 Win Over Howard

Baltimore—After a shaky shart, the UMBC women’s tennis team recovered and defeated visiting Howard, 5-2, in the first match played at the UMBC Tennis Complex in 2010. The Retrievers snapped a brief two-match slide and improved to 5-4 on the season.

Women's Tennis Blanks Hartford; Drops Hard-Fought 5-2 Decision to No. 59 Boston University

The UMBC women’s tennis team (4-3) split a pair of road matches vs. America East foes this weekend, blanking Hartford, 7-0, on Friday, but falling to No. 59 Boston University, 5-2 on Sunday. UMBC did not drop a set in the victory over the Hawks.

Returning to action for the first time since Jan. 23, the UMBC women’s tennis team (3-1) won its third straight match, defeating local rival Morgan State, 7-0, in a match played at Baltimore Fitness & Tennis Center in Pikesville, Maryland.

Women's Tennis Bests Host Duquesne, 5-2

The UMBC women’s tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-2 win over host Duquesne on Saturday, Jan. 23. The Retrievers dropped the doubles point, but captured five of the six singles matches, with UMBC winning in straight sets in four of those contests. Senior Alice Chen sparked the win with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles.

Williamsburg, Va.—The UMBC women’s tennis team evened its record at 1-1 on the season as they edged James Madison (0-2), 4-3, in a match played at The College of William & Mary.

Women's Tennis Drops Opener to Nationally-Ranked William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va.--The UMBC women's tennis team opened its 2010 season by taking on 47th-ranked William & Mary. The Retrievers were very competitive throughout the match, despite dropping a 7-0 decision. The No. 3 doubles tandem of senior Barbara Couto and freshman Lorena Valente took their match to a tie-breaker before falling, 8-7 (7-5).

Fourth Annual Advantage Retriever Tennis Fundraiser Set for Saturday, Sept. 12th

Save the Date!!! The date for UMBC’s fourth annual “Advantage Retriever” tennis fundraiser is set for Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Retriever Tennis Complex. This event is to help raise funds to make improvements to the tennis complex and has raised over $4,000 to date.

Carapcea, Devaud Named America East Scholar Athletes

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Senior Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) and junior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md.) were named America East Scholar Athletes for women’s tennis and men’s indoor track and field, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday. The conference named members of teams in the 15 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons, that represent the best of the America East Conference both academically and athletically.

"Advantage Retriever" Raises Money For Tennis Complex Improvements

The third annual “Advantage Retriever” fundraiser was held Friday, May 15 at the Retriever Tennis Complex. This event is to help raise funds to make improvements to the tennis complex and has raised over $4,000 to date.

Freshmen Shine, But Men's Basketball Season Ends in America East Quarterfinals
West Hartford, Conn.—A pair of freshmen, wing Shawn Grant and post Adrian Satchell gave UMBC fans a promising glimpse of the future, but the seventh-seeded Retrievers dropped a 76-59 decision to second-seeded Vermont (23-9) in the quarterfinals of the 2010 America East Tournament. It was UMBC’s (4-26) first defeat to open tournament play since 2003-04, their first season in the conference.

West Hartford, Conn.—Sophomore guard Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster (N.H.) Academy) earned America East Third Team All-Conference honors, while freshman post Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, it was announced at the conference’s awards reception at the University of Hartford. The seventh-seeded Retrievers meet second-seeded Vermont at 6:00 p.m. in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday.

Men's Basketball to Face Vermont in America East Men's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 6
The seventh-seeded UMBC Retrievers take on the second-seeded Vermont Catamounts in the quarterfinal round of the America East Tournament in West Hartford, Conn. The two league rivals meet at the U. Hartford’s Chase Family Arena in the third quarterfinal contest, which will be played at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The winner will advance to take on the winner of No. 4 Maine vs. No. 5 New Hampshire on Sunday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. All the action of UMBC basketball will be available on the Retrievers’ flagship station, Fox 1370 AM (www.fox1370.com) with Gary Stein on the call.
