Baltimore—After a shaky shart, the UMBC women’s tennis team recovered and defeated visiting Howard, 5-2, in the first match played at the UMBC Tennis Complex in 2010. The Retrievers snapped a brief two-match slide and improved to 5-4 on the season.

The UMBC women’s tennis team (4-3) split a pair of road matches vs. America East foes this weekend, blanking Hartford, 7-0, on Friday, but falling to No. 59 Boston University, 5-2 on Sunday. UMBC did not drop a set in the victory over the Hawks.

Returning to action for the first time since Jan. 23, the UMBC women’s tennis team (3-1) won its third straight match, defeating local rival Morgan State, 7-0, in a match played at Baltimore Fitness & Tennis Center in Pikesville, Maryland.

The UMBC women’s tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-2 win over host Duquesne on Saturday, Jan. 23. The Retrievers dropped the doubles point, but captured five of the six singles matches, with UMBC winning in straight sets in four of those contests. Senior Alice Chen sparked the win with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles.

3/6/2010 Freshmen Shine, But Men's Basketball Season Ends in America East Quarterfinals West Hartford, Conn.—A pair of freshmen, wing Shawn Grant and post Adrian Satchell gave UMBC fans a promising glimpse of the future, but the seventh-seeded Retrievers dropped a 76-59 decision to second-seeded Vermont (23-9) in the quarterfinals of the 2010 America East Tournament. It was UMBC’s (4-26) first defeat to open tournament play since 2003-04, their first season in the conference.

3/5/2010 Men's Basketball: Gilliam, Satchell Earn America East All-Conference Honors West Hartford, Conn.—Sophomore guard Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md./Brewster (N.H.) Academy) earned America East Third Team All-Conference honors, while freshman post Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, it was announced at the conference’s awards reception at the University of Hartford. The seventh-seeded Retrievers meet second-seeded Vermont at 6:00 p.m. in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday.

The two league rivals meet at the U. Hartford’s Chase Family Arena in the third quarterfinal contest, which will be played at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The winner will advance to take on the winner of No. 4 Maine vs. No. 5 New Hampshire on Sunday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. All the action of UMBC basketball will be available on the Retrievers’ flagship station, Fox 1370 AM (www.fox1370.com) with Gary Stein on the call.
