Carapcea, Devaud Named America East Scholar Athletes
Senior Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) and junior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) were named America East Scholar Athletes for women’s tennis and men’s indoor track and field, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday. The conference named members of teams in the 15 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons, that represent the best of the America East Conference both academically and athletically.

Cambridge, Mass.--UMBC women’s tennis standouts Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) and junior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md.) were named to the America East Conference All-Academic team in an announcement made by league officials.

Cambridge, Mass.—UMBC junior Fredi Voorman earned a pair of post-season accolades, and three other Retrievers were cited as the America East Conference announced its 2009 All-Conference teams. Voorman earned Second-Team All-Conference honors at No. 2 singles and teamed with senior Nick Savage-Pollock to earn First-Team honors at No. 1 doubles. On the women’s side, senior Joy Adewumi and sophomore Emily Mannix each earned Second-Team All-Conference honors at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.

New Haven, Conn.--The men’s and women’s tennis teams bowed out in the semifinal round of the America East Conference Championships.

New Haven, Conn.—Seniors Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea spearheaded fourth-seeded UMBC’s 4-0 win over No. 5-seeded Albany in the quarterfinal round of the America East Conference Women’s Tennis Championships held at the Yale Tennis Center. The Retrievers advance to Saturday’s semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Boston University at 1:00 p.m. The men open play on Saturday, as the third-seeded Retrievers face second-seeded Binghamton in the semifinal round at 10:00 a.m.

Stony Brook, N.Y.—The UMBC tennis teams both shutout Hartford, 7-0, on March 18, but, despite some outstanding performances by UMBC’s top players, the host Stony Brook Seawolves edged the Retrievers, 5-2, in both men’s and women’s dual matches on March 19.
