Baltimore—The UMBC men’s tennis team improved to 10-3 on the season with a 7-0 win over Howard in the first match played at the UMBC Tennis Complex in 2010. UMBC is now ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic region. The 10-3 start ties the best in UMBC’s Division I history, as the 1991 squad got off to a 10-3 start en route to a 14-3 season record.

The UMBC men’s tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend at now stand at 9-3 on the season. The Retrievers nipped host Navy, 4-3, on Saturday, March 6, and fell at Old Dominion, 6-1, on Sunday, March 7.

Cambridge, Mass.--UMBC junior Mwali Phiri (Yonkers, N.Y./Tuckahoe/Tyler JC) was named America East Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 28, 2010. The Retriever newcomer posted a 5-1 record over the weekend , including a 4-0 mark in conference play in singles and doubles.

3/6/2010 Freshmen Shine, But Men's Basketball Season Ends in America East Quarterfinals West Hartford, Conn.—A pair of freshmen, wing Shawn Grant and post Adrian Satchell gave UMBC fans a promising glimpse of the future, but the seventh-seeded Retrievers dropped a 76-59 decision to second-seeded Vermont (23-9) in the quarterfinals of the 2010 America East Tournament. It was UMBC’s (4-26) first defeat to open tournament play since 2003-04, their first season in the conference.

Academy) earned America East Third Team All-Conference honors, while freshman post Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, it was announced at the conference’s awards reception at the University of Hartford. The seventh-seeded Retrievers meet second-seeded Vermont at 6:00 p.m. in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday.

The two league rivals meet at the U. Hartford’s Chase Family Arena in the third quarterfinal contest, which will be played at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The winner will advance to take on the winner of No. 4 Maine vs. No. 5 New Hampshire on Sunday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. All the action of UMBC basketball will be available on the Retrievers’ flagship station, Fox 1370 AM (www.fox1370.com) with Gary Stein on the call.
