After one day of competition at the George Mason Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va., the UMBC men’s swimming and diving team stands at the top of the standings with 244 points, while the women are second with 278.

Senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) placed first in three individual events and one relay as the UMBC men’s swimming and diving team defeated Maryland and Towson by a score of 152-148 and 223-73, respectively, Saturday in College Park, Md. The women’s team was defeated by the Terps and the Tigers by a score of 217-83 and 214.5-85.5, respectively.

The UMBC swimming and diving teams were swept by Navy Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The men lost 156-133, while the women fell 166-134. Both teams dropped to 1-1 on the season.

The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams host their first meet of the 2009-10 season Saturday when Navy travels to Baltimore. The men’s meet starts at noon, while the women’s action begins at 2 p.m.

Head UMBC swimming and diving coach Chad Cradock announced Thursday this year’s guest coaches for the Retrievers’ 2009-10 home meets. Dr. Kim Leisey, Dr. Elliot Hirshman and UMBC President Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III will all join the Retrievers at the UMBC Natatorium, continuing the tradition of bridging the gap between academics and athletics.

Seniors Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) have been named America East Female and Male Swimmers of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 18, as announced by the conference Tuesday.

The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined for 17 first place finishes as the Retrievers swept Rider Saturday in Lawrenceville, N.J. The men’s team won 163-133, while the women’s team won 165-135.
