The UMBC men’s soccer program will open the 2009 season by entertaining Virginia Tech University on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at UMBC Soccer Stadium, head coach Pete Caringi announced today. The game against the ACC’s Hokies highlights an exciting 10-game home schedule, which includes a five-game homestand in September and three consecutive home contests in October.

Seniors Dan Bulls and Kevin Gnatiko became the 38th and 39th Retrievers to sign professional soccer contracts. Bulls is competing for Real Maryland, while Gnatiko is a member of Crystal Palace USA, which plays its home games at UMBC Stadium. Both teams are members of the USL-2.

Cambridge, Mass.--UMBC freshman forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) was a unanimous selection to the 2008 America East Conference Men’s Soccer All-Rookie Team. Bulls led UMBC with eight goals and 18 total points in his maiden season. The eight tallies are the most for a Retriever freshman since Derek McElligott netted a dozen in 2001.

Freshman soccer player B.J. Quigley is the subject of an article written by Jessica Bernheim in this week's Press Box magazine. Quigley was the Maryland prep Gatorade Player of the Year last fall, but like any freshman, is making adjustements to the collegiate level.

6/29/2009 Men's Basketball Inks Virginia All-State Guard Jamar Wertz Baltimore, Md.—Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced today that Jamar Wertz (Suffolk, Va./King’s Fork) has signed a grant-in-aid form and will attend UMBC in the fall of 2009. The Virginia High School Coaches Association Group and the Virginia Associated Press named Wertz to the AAA Second-Team All-State boys’ basketball squad after the 2008-09 season. The six-foot-three, 185-lb. wing guard averaged 14.2 points per game last season and helped the Bulldogs (31-1) win the title of the VHSL boys’ basketball state championship.

Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound wing guard who amassed 1,119 points in his prep career. He earned Boys’ Player of the Year honors from the basketball coaches in the Shore Conference and from the media in The Asbury Park Press.
