Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC men’s lacrosse team will participate in the 2009 International Friendship Games as part of a 11-day journey to Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan. All players and coaches from the 2009 Retriever squad will depart Baltimore on Thurs., June 11 and take part in the 20th anniversary of this event. Fans can follow the team throughout the journey by logging onto www.umbcretrievers.com and going to “The Dawg Blog.” Several players will be submitting entries during the trip.

5/21/2009 Record-Tying Four Retrievers Earn All America Honors In Men's Lacrosse
Hoboken, NJ–A trio of UMBC seniors were selected in last night’s Major League Lacrosse’s Entry Draft at Stevens Institute of Technology. Midfielder Peet Poillon was a third-round selection (20th overall) by the Boston Cannons, while midfielder Alex Hopmann and goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins were back-to-back fourth-round picks of the Denver Outlaws.

For the second consecutive year, a school-record tying four UMBC men’s lacrosse players have been selected to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s All-America squads. Senior midfielder Peet Poillon earned the top honor, earning Second Team honors, while senior goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins repeated as an honorable mention selection. Senior midfielder Alex Hopmann and junior linemate Kyle Wimer both earned honorable mention citations.

6/29/2009 Men's Basketball Inks Virginia All-State Guard Jamar Wertz Baltimore, Md.—Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced today that Jamar Wertz (Suffolk, Va./King’s Fork) has signed a grant-in-aid form and will attend UMBC in the fall of 2009. The Virginia High School Coaches Association Group and the Virginia Associated Press named Wertz to the AAA Second-Team All-State boys’ basketball squad after the 2008-09 season. The six-foot-three, 185-lb. wing guard averaged 14.2 points per game last season and helped the Bulldogs (31-1) win the title of the VHSL boys’ basketball state championship.

Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound wing guard who amassed 1,119 points in his prep career. He earned Boys’ Player of the Year honors from the basketball coaches in the Shore Conference and from the media in The Asbury Park Press.
