The UMBC men’s lacrosse team (12-3) is preparing to take on Virginia (12-3) in the first round of the NCAA Championships this Sunday, May 11 at 5:00 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va. Fans may purchase by calling (800) 542-8821. Tickets can also be purchased online at virginiasports.com. Reserved seat tickets offering stadium chair seating under cover are $9 each; general admission tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth 18-and-under, seniors 60-and-over and students of participating schools with a valid student ID. Parking is $5. The Ticket Office encourages all fans to purchase and pick up their tickets in advance to avoid long ticket sales and Will Call lines on game day.

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC men’s lacrosse team completed a miraculous comeback and edged Albany, 14-13, to capture the 2008 America East Conference championship. The Retrievers will earn their third consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships and will learn of their placement on Sunday evening. UMBC rallied from an 11-2 second quarter deficit and freshman midfielder Jamie Kimbles got the game-winning goal with 2:12 remaining.

An automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is up for grabs as familiar rivals UMBC and Albany face off in the America East title game on Saturday night at UMBC Stadium. The opening face-off takes place at UMBC Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The Retrievers are seeded No. 1 for the third time in five years (2005, 2006) and will face Albany for the third straight year in the finals. UMBC triumphed at home in the 2006 championship game, 19-10, while Albany returned serve last year with a 15-14 decision in Albany, N.Y. The first 100 UMBC students at the game on Saturday (with I.D) will receive complimentary admission.

Baltimore, Md.—Junior attackman Ryan Smith scored 53 seconds into overtime as top-seeded UMBC survived a major scare from fourth-seeded Binghamton and edged the Bearcats, 6-5, to advance to the America East Conference championship game. The Retrievers, winners of 10 straight, will meet second-seeded Albany (8-7) for the title on Saturday. The Great Danes advanced with an earlier 12-9 victory over No. 3 Stony Brook. The two teams will meet for the third straight year in the title game with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament at stake.

3/21/2008 "A Season to Remember" Ends in NCAA Tournament Setback to Second-Seeded Georgetown, 66-47 Raleigh, N.C—It was a basketball season like none other before at UMBC. But all good things must come to an end, and this memorable campaign did for the Retrievers today. They fought valiantly but fell to the second-seeded Georgetown Hoyas, 66-47, in the first round of the Midwest regional of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The sold out crowd of 19,477 and a national televised audience witnessed the scrappy and beloved Retrievers (24-9) pester the Hoyas (28-5) into 15 turnovers. However, UMBC could not crack the top defense in the nation and scored a season-low 47 points in the defeat.
