2008 UMBC Retriever Club Golf Classic Set for Monday, June 9

The 2008 UMBC Retriever Club Golf Classic will take place on Mon., June 9 (11:00 a.m. shotgun start) at Rolling Road Club in Catonsville, Md. After 18 holes of golf and lunch on the scenic layout, guests are invited to a dinner buffet, happy hour and silent auction, all to benefit UMBC’s student-athletes. After struggling the first day, the UMBC men's golf team improved to post the second best score today, but it was not enough as the Retrievers finished in eighth place at Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg, PA.

WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES FOURTH AT NEC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Essex, MD-- The UMBC women's golf team captured fourth place today at the NEC Championship at Rocky Point Golf Club in Essex, MD. The Retrievers had their best showing ever for this particular tournament, firing a two-day total 673, besting the previous conference championship mark by seven strokes. Unfortunately for UMBC, three other teams also shot under the previous record, led by champion St. Francis (PA), who registered a 636 to beat the old mark by 44 strokes.

WOMEN IN FOURTH PLACE AFTER DAY ONE OF NEC CHAMPIONSHIPS

UMBC shot a first-day total of 337 and was in fourth place after the first day of the Northeast Conference Women's Golf Championships at Rocky Point GC in Baltimore.

WOMEN'S GOLF TAKES 14th AT LADY DUKES INVITATIONAL

Freshman Jennifer Rhee led the UMBC women's golf team to a 14th place finish with her two-day total of 170 (87-83) at the Lady Dukes Invitational this past weekend. Rhee secured 57th place for her efforts.

MEN'S GOLF FINISHES FOURTH AT LAFAYETTE INVITATIONAL

The UMBC men's golf team had its best finish of the season so far this past weekend as they captured fourth place at the Lafayette Invitational. Their score of 299-306-605 easily outpaced four NEC teams in the field including Monmouth, Wagner, LIU and Fairleigh Dickinson.

MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND AFTER TWO ROUNDS AT LAFAYETTE INVITATIONAL

The Retrievers are in second place, seven strokes behind leader Duquesne after two rounds at the Lafayette Invitational, which is being played at the Architects Club in Lopatcong, New Jersey. Seventeen teams are competing in the three-day event. UMBC sophomore Seth Unterschute is the overall leader with a score of 71 (35-36).

BACHMAN LEADS GOLF AT LIBERTY SPRING CLASSIC

Freshman A.J. Bachman posted a strong eighth place finish as UMBC placed tenth of 13 teams at the Liberty Spring Classic in Penhook, VA.

MEN'S GOLF FINISHES 10th AT CITADEL INVITATIONAL

Summerville, SC-The UMBC men's golf team left the Citadel Invitational in Summerville, South Carolina today with a tenth place finish and thoughts of what might have been. They completed the second day's action in 15 fewer strokes than the first, besting four other teams in the field in the process.

Former Marshall Forward Robbie Jackson Transfers to UMBC; Retrievers Sign Philadelphia-Area Post Jacob Wasco
UMBC Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe has announced that former Marshall University forward Robbie Jackson has signed a grant-in-aid and will attend UMBC in the fall of 2008. In addition, Jacob Wasco (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) has signed a national letter-of-intent and will attend UMBC in the fall of 2008.

"A Season to Remember" Ends in NCAA Tournament Setback to Second-Seeded Georgetown, 66-47
Raleigh, N.C—It was a basketball season like none other before at UMBC. But all good things must come to an end, and this memorable campaign did for the Retrievers today. They fought valiantly but fell to the second-seeded Georgetown Hoyas, 66-47, in the first round of the Midwest regional of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The sold out crowd of 19,477 and a national televised audience witnessed the scrappy and beloved Retrievers (24-9) pester the Hoyas (28-5) into 15 turnovers. However, UMBC could not crack the top defense in the nation and scored a season-low 47 points in the defeat.
