Riggs Homers as Softball Takes Nebraska to the Wire

Postgame Press Conference

Stillwater, OK. –  Emily Riggs (Lancaster, Pa.) blasted a two-run homer, as the UMBC Softball team fell to Big Ten foe Nebraska, 3-2, in an NCAA Tournament elimination game on Saturday.

How it Happened:
  • After a scoreless top of the first, Coppersmith struck out the side in the first
  • Karly Keating (Orlando, Fla.) got a one-out single in the second to extend her hitting streak in NCAA Tournament games to four, but was stranded
  • Ashley Della Guardia (Phoenixville, Pa.) singled and Macy Granzow (Glenn Dale, Md.) doubled with two outs in the third, but UMBC couldn't cash in after Nebraska made a jumping catch of a liner at third to escape.
  • Nebraska hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to go up 2-0
  • Madison Wilson (Abingdon, Md.) worked a leadoff walk in the fourth and Riggs blasted her two-run shot to right-center to tie it with one out
  • Shanel Stott (Cumberland, Md.) followed the homer with a single to force a Huskers pitching change, but the game would remain tied at two.
  • Granzow was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth and moved to second on a wild pitch, and Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) then worked a walk, but a double play ended the inning.
  • Nebraska would re-take the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer, and then hit a double, but Coppersmith would get the next three batters to keep it a 3-2 game.
  • Riggs worked a one out walk in the sixth and Jerzie Nutile (Pasadena, Md.) singled with two outs, but both were stranded
  • UMBC could not get any closer, as Nebraska would close out the game in the seventh

Coppersmith finishes her career with 1,023 career strikeouts, the 93rd most in NCAA history
