UMBC Cross Country Returns to Action at Paul Short Run on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC cross country returns after last running at the Navy Invitational on September 14. In Annapolis, Morgan Casey (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery-Blair) led the women with a 12th place finish while freshman Michael Belmaggio (Frederick, Md./Linganore) placed ninth for the men.

Last Time Out (Navy Invitational):

-UMBC men's and women's cross country teams finished third at the Navy Invitational on Saturday morning. Morgan Casey led the way for the women with a 12th place finish, while freshman Michael Belmaggio led the men with a top ten finish placing ninth. 

-Casey crossed the finish line in a time of 23:31.04 to lead the women. Senior Briana Roberts was the second-fastest Retriever with an 18th place finish in 23:51.24. Emmy Beyer, Margo Henley, and Madison Armonda also scored for the women. Beyer finished in 20th (23:55.38), Henley in 24th (24:03.82), and Armonda in 27th (24:13.13). 

-Belmaggio was the top Retriever on the men's side with his ninth-place finish in a time of 25:55.20. Miles Smith and Taylor Baranoski were just behind him in 13th and 16th place with times of 26:16.12 and 26:22.32 respectively. Chris Thoms and Trent Rose also turned in top 20 finishes with times of 26:28.29 and 26:37.38 in 18th and 20th place.

Last Year at Paul Short:

-Kelsey Ponton continued her outstanding final season as she placed 38th overall in a field of 287 competitors at the Paul Short Run. Ponton covered the 6k in 22:43, 70 seconds faster than her team-best effort at the same distance at Navy two weeks ago. It was the best finish by a Retriever at the Paul Short Run since Sarah Daly and Sophia Cologer placed in the top 20 in the meet in 2015.

-On the men's side, Matt Kingeter led the Retrievers across the line for the first time since 2016. Kingeter place 108th overall in a time of 25:42, 44 seconds faster than his 8k time in the most recent meet at Navy.   

Up Next:

-The Retrievers will have next week off before traveling to Princeton on Saturday, October 19 for the annual Princeton Invitational, the final tuneup before the America East Championships in November.
