ANNAPOLIS – The UMBC women's cross country team continued to face outstanding early season competition as they competed in the Salty Dog Invitational at USNA Golf Course in pristine running conditions this morning.
Sophomore Briana Roberts (Pennsauken, N.J.) sliced 24 seconds off her time from a year ago and led UMBC for the first time in her brief collegiate career. She placed 26th overall of the 92 competitors with a mark of 24.14.78.
Seniors Courtney Mattson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and Olivia Richter (Oxford, Conn.) placed in back-to-back positions (39/40) with times of 24:54.55 and 25:03.20 respectively. Junior Kelsey Ponton (Laurel, Md.) finished in 43rd place (25:08.20) and sophomore Kaya Knake (Canton, Mich.) was UMBC's final scorer in 54th position (25:34.44).
Navy (29) won the meet, followed by Maryland (47), American (56), Towson (108), UMBC (138), St. Mary's (199), McDaniel (210) and Bowie State (242).
UMBC takes a break from competition as the Retrievers do not return to action until Saturday, Sept. 29 when they compete in the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
