Emmitsburg, Md. – Less than one week removed from its pre-season camp, the Retriever women's cross country team opened the 2017 by competing against a tough field in the Mount St. Mary's 5K duals.
Running in unseasonably cool conditions, the Retrievers bested the host Mountaineers, 16-44, and Franklin Pierce, 23-35, but were defeated by strong sides from Navy, GW, American and Maryland.
Senior Courtney Mattson (Prince Frederick, Md.) was the first Retriever to cross the tape, finishing in a time of 19:16.06. It was Mattson's first time leading her teammates in a meet and she sliced 35 seconds off her 2016 time at the same meet.
A trio of Retrievers finished in a seven-second span, led by sophomore Briana Roberts (Pennsauken, N.J.), who placed 52nd with a mark of 19:48.36. Senior Olivia Richter (Oxford, Conn.) was two places behind at 19:52.80, while sophomore Kaya Knake (Canton, Mich.) scored for the first time in her brief tenure, coming in just behind Richter at 19:55.23.
In her debut, freshman Emma Kartalia (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) placed fifth amongst her teammates in a time of 20:06.55.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Annapolis to compete in the Salty Dog Invitational.
