Cross Country Heads to Princeton for Princeton Invitational on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC cross country will return to the course for the first time in two weeks at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17. The meet will consist of 26 schools, and will serve as a preview for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet, which will be held at Princeton in November.

Last Time Out:

The Retrievers last meet was at the annual Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University on October 2. The men took 12th out of 27 teams, while the women were 20th of 35.

The men were paced once again by Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson), who took eighth overall with a time of 24:13. Austin Hayslett (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) and Jon Luckin (Parkton, Md./Hereford) finished 43rd and 68th respectively for the Retrievers, crossing the finish line in times of 24:55 and 25:12.

On the women's side, senior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and junior Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) placed in the top 20 to lead the Retrievers. Daly finished in 13th in a time of 20:55, while Cologer placed 18th in 21:01.

Last Year at the Princeton Invitational:

Hassan Omar continued his strong season, turning in a  fourth place finish for the Retrievers. UMBC as a team finished in fifth place. Omar crossed the tape in 24:06, finishing just six seconds behind the winner, Thomas Awad from Penn.

Austin Hayslett and Eric Schuler finished in 28th and 29th respectively. Hayslett crossed the line in 24:47, while Schuler was just a second behind at 24:48. Jon Luckin was next across the finish line at 25:11 in 58th place. Noah Hutton rounded out the scorers for UMBC, finishing in 83rd place, with a time of 25:27.

The UMBC women's cross country team turned in an 11th place finish at the Princeton Invitational. Sophia Cologer was the top finisher, turning in a 12th place finish. Cologer crossed the tape with a time of 22:03 in the 5k race. The next Retriever across the finish line was Katie Govatos. Govatos finished with a time of 22:33 in 41st place.

Nicole Dawson, Julie Gessler, and Angelina Oputa rounded out the scorers for the Retrievers. Dawson finished in 78th with a time of 23:01, while Gessler finished in 92nd in 23:10. Oputa rounded out the scoring with a 142nd place finish in a time of 23:48.

On the Horizon:

The Retrievers will compete at the America East Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Stony Brook, N.Y. Last year the men placed third while the women took home fourth place.
