Stony Brook, N.Y.—UMBC cross country got a preview of the America East Championship course today at the Wolfe Invitational, hosted by Stony Brook. The men finished in third place, and the women took second at the meet.
For the women, senior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) led the way for the Retrievers, placing second with a time of 19:04. Joining Daly in the top ten was junior Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) who took sixth with a time of 19:32 and Cindy Alms (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) in tenth with a time of 19:58.
Other scorers for the women include Harmony Roche (Millersville, Md./Severn School) took 20:16 in 14th place while Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) finished in 20:27 for 15th place.
On the men's side, senior Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) was the top finisher for the second straight week, placing second with a time of 26:11.
Omar was one of three Retrievers in the top ten, as Rhys Burgett (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Austin Hayslett (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) took home sixth and eighth respectively. Burgett crossed the line in a time of 26:38, while Hayslett finished in a time of 26:46.
The other two UMBC scorers where junior Jon Luckin (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and freshman Matt Kane (Sykesville, Md./Century) took 17th and 18th. Luckin finished in 27:02 while Kane finished in 27:03.
The Retrievers will head to the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, October 3. The annual invitational will be held at Lehigh University and begin at 10:00 a.m.
