Emmitsburg, Md.—UMBC cross country kicked off the 2015 campaign with a strong showing at the Mount 5K Duals on Friday. Retriever senior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) placed first in the women's field for the second consecutive year. On the men's side, senior Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) placed second.
The women were led by Daly, who won last year's race, and repeated this year crossing the tape in 18:27.4. Not too far behind her was junior Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) in third place, finishing in 18:46.8.
Rounding out the Retriever scorers were junior Katelyn Callaghan (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) in seventh place (19:14.8), senior Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) in eleventh place (19:29.8.) and junior Cindy Alms (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) in 12th place (19:32.1).
The men saw senior Hassan Omar lead the charge, as they finished in second as a team, just behind American. Omar took second place with a time of 15:45.9. Freshman Matthew Kane (Sykesville, Md./Century) placed sixth in his first collegiate meet, crossing the tape in 16:11.6.
The other three men's scorers were senior Austin Hayslett (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana), sophomore Rhys Burgett (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and freshman Nathan Nadal (Silver Spring, Md./Wootton). Hayslett and Burgett took home eighth and ninth place with times of 16:16.3 and 16:18.1 respectively. Nadal finished his first college race with a time of 16:31.6 in 13th place.
The Retrievers will be in action on September 12 at the Stony Brook Invitational. The meet will be a preview of the America East Championships later in October.
