Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC women's cross country team will head up to Penn State University this weekend for the 2014 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Retrievers will be part of a 32 team field, looking to improve on their 18th place finish a year ago.

UMBC is coming off of their best ever finish at the America East Championships on November 1. The Retrievers finished the event in fourth place, besting their fifth place finish from a year ago.
Sophomore Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and junior Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) led the charge with top 20 finishes. Cologer placed 13th with a time of 18:13.70, while Govatos finished in 20th crossing the tape at 18:39.66.
Junior Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond), junior Angelina Oputa (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and senior Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) rounded out the scoring Retrievers. Dawson finished the race in 28th with a time of 18:59.94, while Oputa finished in 19:15.21, good for 35th place. Gessler finished her career with a 37th place finish in 19:16.95.
Elinor Purrier from New Hampshire won the race, with a time of 17:19.42. Purrier's first place finish helped the Wildcats take home the gold for the second year in a row. Stony Brook and Vermont went two and three, just ahead of the Retrievers. Albany, UMass Lowell and Hartford went five through seven, while Binghamton and Maine rounded out the nine team field.
LAST YEAR AT THE NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional:
Cody Mezebish led the Retrievers at last year's regionals. Cody turned in a 64th place finish for the Retrievers, finishing in a time of 21:33 on the 6k course. Nicole Dawson turned in the second best finish for UMBC of the day with a 107th place finish in a time of 22:13.
Villanova took home the gold, finishing with 31 points including three of the top five finishers. Emily Lipari of Villanova finished in first with a time of 19:52.
