UMBC Cross Country at Salty Dog Invitational

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC women's cross country squad heads to the U.S. Naval Academy for the Salty Dog Invitational this weekend. UMBC is coming off a stellar showing at the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals back on August 29th.
Last Time Out: Senior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) won the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals with a time of 17:50.98. She bested a field of 69, as UMBC went 3-1 at the duals. Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) earned fourth and ninth place finishes respectively.
Last Year at the Salty Dog: The Retrievers finished in fourth place at last year's Salty Dog Invitational. Nicole Dawson led UMBC with a 16th place finish in a time of 21:58.88. Fellow Retriever Cody Mezebish finished 18th, just two seconds behind Dawson. Navy won the event, edging out Maryland and American. Anne-Norah Beveridge from Navy won with a time of 20:46.23.
On the Horizon: UMBC will have off until the Paul Short Invitational on October 4. The Paul Short Invitational will be held at Lehigh University, and will begin at 10:00 a.m.
2014 Season Outlook: The 2013 team earned their best-ever finish at the America East Championships by placing fifth. Junior Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) was also selected to the America East All-Academic Team. After earning a top-five team finish in all seven races as a freshman, Dawson kicked off her sophomore campaign by leading UMBC across the line at both the America East Pre-Conference Meet and the Salty Dog Invitational.
Seniors Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./IND )and junior transfer Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) should also factor in as UMBC attempts to reach even greater heights in 2014.
