Women's Cross Country Opens 2014 Campaign at Mount St. Mary's Duals

A veteran UMBC women's cross country squad opens its 2014 campaign by competing in the Mount St. Mary's Duals on Friday, August 29. The meets get underway at 1:00 p.m. in Emmitsburg, Md.

Sixteen letterwinners return to head coach Matt Gittermann's squad, which also welcomes four talented freshmen.

The 2013 team earned their best-ever finish at the America East Championships by placing fifth.

The Retrievers last competed at Mount St. Mary's Duals in 2011 and the women placed fourth with a record of 3-3.

Junior Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) was also selected to the America East All-Academic Team. After earning a top-five team finish in all seven races as a freshman, Dawson kicked off her sophomore campaign by leading UMBC across the line at both the America East Pre-Conference Meet and the Salty Dog Invitational. 

Seniors Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./IND )and junior transfer Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) should also factor in as UMBC attempts to reach even greater heights in 2014.
