The UMBC Volleyball will leave the friendly confines of the UMBC Event Center for the first time this year when it makes the 20 minute drive over to Loyola (Md.) for the Charm City Challenge presented by Residence Inn Owings Mills.
UMBC (2-4) will face Charlotte and Canisius on Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, before wrapping up the weekend with a 2 p.m. Saturday match against the host Greyhounds.
Freshman Kamani Conteh (New Castle, Del.) continued the torrid start to her collegiate career as she was named to the Retriever Challenge All-Tournament, her second straight week making an All-Tournament Team. She averaged 3.66 kills per set, had a career high four blocks in a five set loss to George Mason and a career-best nine digs against Delaware as UMBC ended UD's 12 set winning streak.
Redshirt-junior setter Taylor Dunn (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a career weekend after picking up two double-doubles, which included a career-high 54 assists against George Mason.
The 49ers enter the weekend at 4-4 having dropped four of their last five after being swept at South Carolina on Tuesday evening,
Charlotte is lead by back-to-back Conference USA Libero of the Year Yumi Garcia. The senior is near the top of the country in digs per set (6.00), having picked up 156 digs in only 26 sets. Junior Sydney Rowan leads the team in kills (91), kills per set (3.37) and aces (12). The outside hitter also is second on the team in digs (85) and digs per set (3.15).
The Golden Griffins travel down from Buffalo having been swept in three straight matches to fall to 2-4 on the season. All four Canisius losses this season have come via sweep, while both victories were of the five-set variety.
Senior middle hitter Leah Simmons has picked up 63 kills on 2.86 kills per set, both team-bests, on .242 hitting while adding 13 blocks. Classmate Cassidy Ceriani has been the the Griffs primary setter this season, notching 182 assists on 8.27 assists per set.
Scouting Loyola (Md.)
The Greyhounds (2-5) snapped a five match losing streak with a five set win at Howard on Tuesday. Four of Loyola's seven matches have gone to five sets, with the Hounds going 2-2 in them.
Defending Patriot League Rookie and Libero of the Year Katie Forsythe anchors the Loyola defense, averaging 5.07 digs per set so far in 2019. Senior Ann Ernst was a first team All-Patriot League outside hitter last season, and continues to lead the offense this season. The Illinois native has a team-best 116 kills (3.87 kills per set), and has also helped defensively, adding 15 blocks.
