Volleyball to Host Retriever Challenge Beginning on Friday

The UMBC Volleyball team will conclude its season-opening six match homestand when it faces Saint Francis (Pa.), George Mason and Delaware this weekend as part of the Retriever Challenge. 

UMBC (1-2) will face SFU and GMU on Friday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, before wrapping up the weekend with a 2 p.m. Saturday match against the Blue Hens. 

Freshman Kamani Conteh (New Castle, Del.) kicked-off her collegiate career with 22 kills on .457 hitting as the Retrievers defeated visiting Lafayatte in four sets. The Delaware native was named to the UMBC Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging a team-best 3.25 kills per set over three matches.

Scouting Saint Francis (Pa.) 

The Red Flash enter the weekend 0-3 after winning just one set in their trip to Youngstown State for the Penguin Invitational. SFU was swept by the hosts and Bucknell, with a four set loss to The Citadel sandwiched in-between. 

Sophomore outside hitter Madi Tyus is powering both the SFU offense and defense, averaging 4,20 kills per set and 3.60 digs per set, both team-bests. Classmate Kimmy Sweeney has been the primary setter for the Red Flash, as she is responsible for 86 of the team's 95 assists.


Scouting George Mason

The Patriots (0-2) were swept in a pair of home matches by East Carolina and Providence on Sunday. Senior outside hitter Bailey Williams combined for 27 kills on a .243 hitting percentage over the two games. Erin Derick and Emily Konchan have each seen time at setter, accumulating 45 and 32 assists, respectively. 


Scouting Delaware

The Blue Hens (2-1) travel to Baltimore winners of two straight after dropping a four set match to West Virginia to open the campaign. UD then swept America East rival Binghamton and local opponent Coppin State. 

Senior outside hitter Maria Bellinger was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 4.40 kills per set to go along with 2.10 digs per set. The 2018 First Team All-CAA and 2019 Preseason All-CAA selection had 19 kills against West Virginia and then added a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs against Coppin State.
