Baltimore, Md. -- The senior quartet of Taylor Alexander (Detroit, Mich), Krytsia Negrón (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) and Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md.) all contributed as they ended their careers in dominating fashion, with a sweep of Hartford (25-17, 25-9, 25-20) on Sunday in front of a boisterous UMBC Event Center crowd.
UMBC (7-19, 3-9) hit an astounding .376 on the day, while holding the Hawks (11-13, 4-8) to just .105 hitting and 23 errors. The high-point of the match was the second set, in which the Retrievers hit .500 while holding Hartford to -.091 hitting.
Rojas had four blocks, hit .333 and tied with Brooke Hayden (Mt.Airy, Md.) for the match-lead with 10 kills. Hayden hit .556 with seven digs and two blocks. Watson led all players with 13 digs, while Alexander finished with three digs of her own.
Sophomore Becca Elrod (Cary, Ill.) had eight kills on .429 hitting with six blocks, while classmate Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with seven kills on .353 hitting and two digs. Taylor Dunn (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Negrón split time at setter in the match, each playing a set-and-a-half and finishing with 20 and 12 assists, respectively.
Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo.) finished with six kills, three digs and a block, while Dunn added a kill and Watson added three assists. Gabrielle Curran (Naples, Fla.) finished five digs, an ace and a kill, while Colleen Boarman (Baltimore, Md.) added a dig and two aces.
