Baltimore, Md. -- Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) tied a career-high with 22 kills, while senior libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md.) had a match-best 32 digs and career-high eight assists, as the UMBC Volleyball team battled regular season champion Stony Brook for five sets (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12) before falling on Friday night.
Stony Brook (18-8, 11-0) entered the night on a 13-match winning streak, having only lost three sets in 10 conference matches and sweeping ten of them. They had not gone more than four sets in the the other three matches. The had not played five sets since their last loss, back on September 14th.
Sophomore Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with another double-double with 18 kills and 19 digs for UMBC (6-19, 2-9), while setter Taylor Dunn (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with a 50 assists and a career high 22 digs for a double-double of her own.
Sophomore Becca Elrod (Cary, Ill.) tied had nine kills and added seven blocks, while Brooke Hayden (Mt.Airy, Md.) had seven kills and nine digs. Rojas added four blocks and Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo.) finished with four kills and three blocks.
UMBC closes out the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Hartford, who clinched the final playoff spot with a win over Binghamton tonight.
