Baltimore, Md. -- Junior middle blocker Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo.) had 13 kills on .476 hitting with five blocks, as the UMBC Volleyball team rallied from two sets down before ultimately falling in five sets to visiting Binghamton (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 19-25,15-13) in the America East opener for both teams on Friday night at the UMBC Event Center.
UMBC (3-11, 0-1) combined for 14 blocks, with Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) finishing with nine and Krytsia Negrón (San Juan Puerto Rico) tallying a career-high eight. Binghamton (3-11,1-0) ended the match on a 4-0 run to secure the victory.
Paige Krenik (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had a match-best 18 kills (.255), while Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with a 11 kills and 19 digs. Negrón added 45 assists and 15 digs to go with her eight blocks, while Rojas chipped in nine kills (.304). Jamie Wood (Satellite Beach, Fla.) had six kills and Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md.) finished with 15 digs.
The Retrievers return to the UMBC Event Center on Tuesday when they close non-conference play with local rival Coppin State at 7 pm.
