Volleyball Defeats Loyola (Md.) For First Ever Win at UMBC Event Center

Baltimore, Md. -- Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) notched a career-best 20 kills to go along with 11 kills as the UMBC Volleyball team defeated cross-town rival Loyola in four sets (19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-16) to pick up the program's first win at the UMBC Event Center on Saturday afternoon.

Setter Krytsia Negrón (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had a match-best 51 assists to go with 10 digs for her sixth consecutive double-double. The senior was named to the All-Tournament Team for a second time this season.

Kristin Watson (Bowie, MD) had 23 digs and added three assists and two aces, while Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) hit .300 with 10 kills and three blocks.

Freshman Jamie Wood (Satellite Beach, Fla.) had the best match of her young career, finishing with nine kills on a robust .533 hitting percentage. Fellow freshmen Gabrielle Curran (Naples, Fla.) and Paige Krenik (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) also had solid performances. Curran finished with five kills (.625 hitting percentage) and a career-high 12 digs, while Krenik filled the stat sheet with four kills, seven digs, two aces and a block.

Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo.) had seven kills and four blocks, while classmate Brooke Hayden (Mt. Airy, Md.) contributed three kills and 10 digs.

The Retrievers stay in Baltimore as they make the short trek to Towson for a tournament next weekend. They face Ball State on Friday at 3:30 pm and then face La Salle and the host Tigers on Saturday.
