Volleyball to Host Charm City Challenge in Inaugural Matches at UMBC Event Center

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC volleyball team will be starting their home part of the schedule this weekend, as they host the Charm City Challenge. The Retrievers will kick off the tournament on Friday, September 7 with a doubleheader, first against Robert Morris at 10:00 AM, followed by the nightcap against James Madison at 7:00 PM. They will finish out play in the tournament on Saturday, September 8 against Loyola (Md.) at 2:00 PM. This will be the first action the Retrievers will see in the UMBC Event Center since its opening in February.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC enters the weekend coming off a 1-2 record at the Bruiser Showcase, hosted by Belmont University. The Retrievers defeated host Belmont in five sets, behind Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) hitting .333 and adding seven blocks while being aided by Paige Krenik (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Carmen Freeman's (Memphis, Tenn.) double doubles. Krytsia Negrón had a double double in all three games over the weekend, posting 32 assists and 11 digs against East Tennessee State and 38 assists and 18 digs against Tulsa.

Rojas was named to the All Tournament team after the Bruiser Showcase concluded.

Scouting the Colonials:

Robert Morris is coming off their first win of the season, defeating Kent State in five sets in their home opener. Alyson Londot paces the Colonials with a team high 63 kills (2.52 killes per set), while Whitney Brown has team highs in hitting percentage (.280) and assists (170).

Scouting the Dukes:

James Madison is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Creeds & Crests Classic, hosted by Texas State. The Dukes are lead by M'Kaela White, who leads the team with 80 kills (3.08 kills per set) and a hitting percentage of .406. Sarah Martin has a team high 263 assists on the season.  

Scouting the Greyhounds:

Loyola (Md.) remains in Baltimore, as they are coming off a midweek matchup against Coppin State, where they swept the Lady Eagles. Ann Ernst leads the Greyhounds with 87 kills to go along with a 3.35 kills per set average. Molly Werts has a team high 155 assists, and is second behind Alisah Cash (.266) in hitting percentage with a .263.
