Volleyball Set to Travel to Nashville for Bruiser Showcase

Nashville, Tn. – The UMBC Volleyball Team will be heading to the Nashville this weekend to take part in this weekend's Bruiser Showcase, hosted by Belmont University.  The Retrievers will take on the hosts Belmont at 12:30 PM on Friday, along with East Tennessee St. at 5 PM.  On Saturday, UMBC will wrap up the tournament with a match against Tulsa, beginning at 12 PM on Saturday.  All times listed are Eastern Standard Time. 

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC enters the weekend following a 1-2 start to the season at the Penn State Classic.  Sophomore outside hitter Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) led the charge in the squad's victory over Eastern Kentucky with 19 kills (.317) and 14 digs.  Freshman Paige Krenik (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) contributed 13 kills (.250) and eight digs and senior Krytsia Negrón (San Juan, Puerto Rico) provided 40 assists to lead the Retrievers to the 3-0 sweep.  Senior libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md.) recorded 16 digs and Paola Rojas added eight kills (.278) and five blocks. 

Freeman and Negrón were named to the All-Tournament team, and Krenik earned America East Rookie of the Week honors for their performances at University Park.

Scouting the Bruins:

The hosts come into the weekend after going 0-4 in the Tennessee Classic to begin their season, as well as dropping a weekday match at Western Kentucky on Tuesday.  The Bruins are led by Maggie Mullins offensively, with a team high 43 kills on .227 hitting (2.69 kills per set).  Mullins is also averaging 1.50 digs per set.  Carly Mason has recorded a team high 106 assists and 35 digs in the Bruins' first five matches of the season.

Scouting the Buccaneers:

ETSU enters play this weekend after a strong opening weekend at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.  The Buccaneers went 2-1 with victories over Clemson and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and dropping their match against the host South Carolina.

Leah Clayton leads ETSU on offense, averaging 5.10 kills per set.  Braedyn Tutton is hitting .459 with 20 kills and Alyssa Kvarta has 102 assists in the Buccaneers first three matches.  Marija Popvic has recorded a team-best 46 assists to lead the way defensively.

Scouting the Golden Hurricane:

Tulsa comes off a weekend in Indiana in which they went 2-1 at the Purdue Reamer Club Extra Special Premier.  Tulsa took their opening matches of the season against Bowling Green and Wofford, while dropping the final match against the host Purdue.  Rachel Moore led the way over the weekend with a total of 31 kills on .278 hitting.  Emily Thorson also provided 26 kills to begin the season.  Mariah Pardo and Emily Hubbard each recorded 25 digs in the Golden Hurricane's opening weekend.
