Colorado Springs, Colo. -- Rising senior libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md.) will take part in the 2018 U.S. National Volleyball team tryout this upcoming weekend, the two-time all-conference selection will be the first Retriever in program history to take part in the event.
"I would like to congratulate Kristin on going to the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout next weekend. It is a great honor for her and a big step for our program," said head coach Cristina Robertson. "The level of coaching she will receive and competition she will face will definitely help with her development as a player and will also contribute to our growth as a program. Her attending the tryout speaks of not only her skill level as a volleyball player but also her competitive spirit and willingness to continue to learn and grow. We wish Watts the best of luck!"
From March 2-4, 2018, around 240 athletes converged on Colorado Springs with hopes of earning a spot in one of the U.S. Women's National Team Programs. Athletes will be bidding for spots not only in the Women's National Team gym, but also positions on the U.S. Collegiate National Team Programs, both domestic and international.
Throughout the tryout process, USA Volleyball will be identifying prospective athletes for the following programs:
U.S. Women's Senior National Team – Athletes who have concluded their college eligibility and who wish to be invited to be a member of the U.S. Women's Volleyball National Team on a full-time basis. This program could begin as early as the spring of 2018, or when an athlete's scholastic or professional club season has concluded.
Also considered for training with this group will be athletes who have remaining college eligibility. Their participation will begin in mid-May or when their scholastic calendar ends for 2018.
U.S. Women's Collegiate National Teams (CNT) – Athletes born 1999 or earlier and with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2018 collegiate season may also be invited to participate with one of three possible USA Collegiate National Teams (CNT).
- U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team – May 20-31, CNT Asia (International)
- U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team – July 4-15, CNT Europe (International)
- U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team – June 22-July 1, CNT-Detroit, Michigan (Domestic)
Watson was named America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, All-Conference First Team (first Retriever in program history to win conference defensive player of the year, and was only defensive specialist named to either the first or second all-conference team) in 2016, and to the All-Conference Second and All-Academic Teams in 2017. She finished 17th in the nation in digs per set in 2017. holds eight of the top ten single game dig records in program history and has accumulated 1,001 career digs (911 in the past two seasons).
