Volleyball Travels for Final Road Conference Games of the Season

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Volleyball team will hit the road for the final time this regular season this weekend when they travel to face Albany on Friday at 7:00 PM and Binghamton on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC (13-9, 5-3 America East) is currently on a two-game losing streak, dropping games against Albany and Stony Brook at the RAC.  They currently are tied with Stony Brook for second in the conference.

On defense, the Retrievers are led by their libero junior Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) who has a team high 340 digs on the year.  Watson is leading the America East with 5.40 digs per set.  Sophomore Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo./Grand View) holds the conference lead with 1.18 blocks per set.

Offensively, freshman Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) has 225 kills on the year, and averages 3.04 kills per set, ranking her fifth in the America East.  Junior Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) ranks seventh in the conference with 2.79 kills per set, and is also hitting .252 on the year.  Setter Krystia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) is third in the conference with 10.11 assists per set.  Negron has 627 assists on the season.

Scouting the Great Danes:

Albany (8-13, 8-1 AE) comes into the weekend on a seven-game winning streak, and have clinched a spot in the America East Tournament.  They are in first-place in the conference.

Nicole Otero currently ranks second behind Watson in digs per set in the conference with 4.60.  Freshman Danielle Tedesco received her first Rookie of the Week award after recording 1.8 blocks per set and hitting .583 for the two games last weekend.

Akuabata Okenwa leads the Great Danes on offense with 233 kills, and is third in the conference with 3.28 kills per set. Okenwa also averages 1.75 digs per set.  Kelly Cameron is the leading setter on the team, with 543 assists, giving her 8.62 assists per set.

The Great Danes have lost just three sets over the course of their winning streak.

Scouting the Bearcats:

Binghamton (8-14, 5-4 AE) enters the weekend just a half-game behind UMBC and Stony Brook in the conference.  They are on a two-game winning streak after beating both New Hampshire and UMass Lowell on the road last weekend.

Erin Shultz was named America East Player of the Week last weekend, after averaging 5.0 kills and 2.6 digs per set.  Sarah Ngo, the conference's second leading setter with 10.18 assists per set, was named Setter of the Week for her 12.7 assists per set in the Bearcats matches last weekend.

Gabby Alicea currently leads the America East with 304 kills and 3.62 kills per set, while Lexi Lagoy leads the conference in hitting with a .329 percentage.

Inside the Matchups:

The Retrievers are 8-28 all-time against Albany, losing their last meeting 3-0 at the RAC, while they are 15-19 against Binghamton, winning their last match 3-1, also at home.
