Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Volleyball team will look to extend their three-game winning streak this weekend when they face off against Hartford, Friday at 7 p.m., and Albany, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the RAC.
Scouting the Retrievers:
UMBC (12-7, 4-1 America East) is coming off a perfect weekend with wins at New Hampshire and at UMass Lowell, pushing their win streak to three games, and going 7-1 in their last eight matches.
Junior Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) led the Retrievers over the weekend with a career-high 22 kills against New Hampshire, and hitting .431 for both matches. Rojas was named Co-Player of the Week for the conference. The victory over New Hampshire was UMBC's first since 2010 over the Wildcats.
Junior libero captain Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) continues to lead the team on defense with a team-best 280 digs, and a conference-best 5.28 digs per set. Sophomore Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo./Grand View) leads the team in blocks with 67, and leads the conference with 1.18 blocks per set.
The Retrievers currently sit atop the America East standings, tied with Albany.
Scouting the Hawks:
Hartford (5-14, 2-4 AE) is coming off a split weekend, defeating UMass Lowell and being swept by New Hampshire, both on the road. Abby Nash recorded 19 kills in their win over UMass Lowell on Friday.
Katy Henchy leads the Hawks on offense with 153 kills, while Nash has 151 kills on the year. Megan Anderson is the lead setter, recording 310 assists on the year. Nash also leads the team on the defensive side with 143 digs on the year.
The Hawks are currently in sixth in the America East.
Scouting the Great Danes:
Albany (4-13, 4-1 AE) is coming off a victory over Stony Brook last Sunday.
The Great Danes received strong performances in their match from Kelly Cameron with 51 assists, Nicole Otero with 31 digs, and Tiango Tiangco recorded 15 kills. Cameron was named Setter of the Week, Otero was named Defensive Specialist of the Week, and Tiangco was named Rookie of the Week in the America East.
Akuabata Okenwa leads Albany in kills with 193, while Cameron has the team lead in assists with 399. Otero has 261 digs on the year, averaging 4.42 per set.
Albany is currently tied with UMBC for first place in the conference.
Inside the Matchups:
UMBC holds the all-time record advantage, going 26-5 against Hartford, with the last matchup being a Retriever victory a month ago at Hartford. UMBC is 8-27 all-time against Albany with the last matchup being a 3-0 victory for the Great Danes in the conference tournament.
