Volleyball Continues Conference-Opening Road Swing With Sunday Matinee at Stony Brook

The UMBC Volleyball team will hit the road this Sunday for their second America East match of the year when they take on Stony Brook at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC (9-6, 1-0) are coming off a road victory at Hartford (29-27, 25-21, 25-18) to open up the conference season.  The win was the Retrievers' fourth straight victory and their eighth in their last nine matches.

Junior Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) led the team with 14 kills on .684 hitting against Hartford, while freshman Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.  Junior Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) added 41 assists in the match, and classmate Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) recorded a match-best 16 digs.

Negron, Watson, and Freeman were recognized for their strong performances last week, all being named to America East honors.  Negron received her second Setter of the Week award, Watson received her second Defensive Specialist of the Week award, and Freeman received her third-straight Rookie of the Week award.

Freeman holds a team-best 145 kills, while Negron leads the team with 376 assists.  Watson leads UMBC defensively with 204 digs on the year.

Scouting the Seawolves:

Stony Brook (9-6, 0-0) returns to action on Friday after 10 days off by opening up their conference schedule at home against Hartford. They come into the conference season riding a five-game winning streak, including a 3-2 victory at St. John's last Tuesday.

Emily Costello leads the team with 169 kills, while LeAnne Sakowicz has a team-best 598 assists, and averages 10.31 assists per set.  Kiani Kerstetter leads the team on defense with 264 digs.

Cydney Bowman is the reigning America East Player of the Week after recording 16 kills on .800 hitting against St. John's.

Inside the Matchup: 

UMBC is 14-15 all-time against Stony Brook with the last matchup coming on the road, with a 3-2 victory last season.
