Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Volleyball team (1-5) returns from the midwest to open up the home schedule against in-state rival Coppin State (0-6) Tuesday night at 7:00 PM at the RAC Arena.
Scouting the Retrievers:
UMBC is coming off a weekend tournament at Nebraska in the Ameritas Players Challenge. The Retrievers battled strong against all three opponents, including losing two close sets to No.12 Nebraska by scores of 25-19 and 25-20. The team is led offensively this season by freshman Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) and senior Ashley Ramos (Orlando, Florida/Liberty/Monroe JC) with 49 and 41 kills respectively. Redshirt junior Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) leads the team in assists, recording 126 in five matches played. Defensively, the team has been led by libero junior Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) with 96 digs.
Scouting the Eagles:
The Eagles are coming off a weekend tournament in Pittsburgh in the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational. Coppin State dropped all three matches, taking one set against Canisius, but losing in straight sets to the dual hosts. They are led offensively by Asia Stennis with 53 kills and by Dominique Madarang with 126 assists. On defense, Glorines Rosado leads the Eagles with 76 digs, as well as Bailee Jackson with 49 digs.
Inside the Matchup:
The Retrievers hold a 15-2-1 series lead over the Eagles, with the most recent meeting coming in 2015, which the Retrievers won 3-0.
