Volleyball Falls in Four to Albany Despite Panchak's Big Night

Baltimore -- Red-shirt freshman Emily Panchak (Wilmington, Del./Concord/Wichita State) tallied a career-high 15 kills on a .324 hitting percentage, but the UMBC Volleyball team fell to Albany in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22) on Friday night at The RAC.

Panchak easily eclipsed her previous career-high of 11 kils set on September 10 in a five set loss to Robert Morris. The Delaware native also tied a career high with four digs, while chipping in two blocks.

UMBC (10-5, 1-2) dominated the first set, hitting .277 with 18 and leading by as much as six points before holding off a late Great Dane rally. 

Albany (10-6, 4-0) took a tight second set, before using a late run to pull away in the third set and winning another back-and-forth affair in the fourth set.

Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St.Mark's) had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while senior Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta/Bagryana) contributed 10 kills, sic digs, two blocks and an ace. 

Junior Ashley Ramos (Orlando, Fla./Liberty, Monroe JC) finished with nine kills and 11 digs, while sophomore libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md/ Eleanor Roosevelt) had 29 digs and five assists. Sophomore setter Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) had a double-double with 44 assists and 11 digs, while also adding two blocks and a kill.

The Retrievers have a quick turnaround as they welcome Binghamton to The RAC on Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown. The match will be the annual Power in Pink match, and is also the #AEFoodFrenzy match. Fans are asked to bring canned food that will later be donated.
