Volleyball Opens America East Play Against Stony Brook Friday Night at The RAC
The UMBC Volleyball team (9-3), off to its best start in 10 seasons, returns to The RAC to open America East play against Stony Brook (4-10) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Defending America East Setter of the Week Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) is coming off a fantastic effort at the Lion Invitation in NYC last Friday. The redshirt-sophomore led UMBC to 2-0 weekend by averaging a league-best 12.57 assists per set. She also helped on the defensive end, averaging 2.14 digs per set.
The Retrievers and Seawolves will meet for the 28th time in the all-time series. Stony Brook holds a 15-12 all-time lead. Each team won at home in 2015, with Stony Brook sweeping UMBC on Long Island in September. A month later, the Retrievers would go on to win in four sets in Baltimore.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES
Stony Brook will enter America East play on a two-match winning streak. Both wins were at home and of the five set variety. The Seawolves defeated Fort Wayne on Saturday and Fordham on Tuesday. McKyla Brooks is the top offensive threat for SBU, averaging 2.04 k/s with .327 hitting percentage. Setter Morgan Kath is averaging 9.12 a/s for a total of 474. Kardasia Hitchcock leads the defensive effort, averaging 2.73 d/s.
