The UMBC Volleyball team heads to New York City to take on host Columbia and Providence at the Lion Invitational this Friday. Both games will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
UMBC enters the invitational at 7-3, after winning the Maddie Bingaman Tournament at home last weekend.
Scouting UMBC: The Retrievers have won five of their last six matches, including two tournaments. Sophomore setter Claudia Lopez was named MVP of last weekend's tournament after tallying 101 assists in just nine sets. Senior Zoya Trendafilova and sophomore Kristin Watson both earned All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive weekend. Watson was named America East Defensive Specialist of the Week after averaging 5.27 digs per set.
Scouting Columbia: The host Lions come into the weekend with a 2-3 record on this season. CU went 2-1 at the Columbia Classic last weekend with freshman Chichi Ikwuazom, senior Kesi Neblett and junior Anja Malesevic all posting season highs in kills and hitting percentages.
Scouting Providence: The Friars have started 2016 with a 9-2 record. Providence went 2-1 last weekend at the 12th Annual Friar Classic, defeating Holy Cross and LaSalle, while falling to Quinnipiac. Senior defensive specialist Michelle Cruz was named MVP and to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season. Cruz finished with a total of 86 digs in the tournament.
UMBC will face Columbia at 10:30 a.m. and will play Providence at 1:30 p.m.
