Volleyball Wins Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament, Lopez Named MVP; Retrievers Drop 5 Setter to RMU

BALTIMORE—Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) finished with 35 assists in the UMBC volleyball team's final match of the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament Saturday, but the Retrievers fell in a five-set battle versus Robert Morris, 3-2. Still, Lopez earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors, and UMBC wound up winning the event.

UMBC (7-3) saw its five-match winning streak end but still captured a tournament for the second consecutive weekend. The Retrievers also won the Charm City Challenge last weekend.
In this match, Robert Morris won the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-14, before UMBC took the next two (25-14 and 25-22). The Colonials then jumped to big leads in the final set (5-0 and 8-3) before UMBC rallied to tie late in the match but Robert Morris scored the last three points and earned the 17-15 victory.
Lopez earned MVP honors for her great work in making the UMBC offense go. Her 35 assists in this match went along with the 37 and 29 she posted in the team's other wins in the tournament. They were match-high numbers each time.
Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St.Mark's) and Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) both turned in strong efforts once more. Mirabella posted 17 kills and 12 digs while Trendafilova added 18 kills.

Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md/Eleanor Roosevelt) also played well, finishing with a match-best 27 digs,  For the second consecutive tournamentm Trendafilova and Watson both earned All-Tournament team honors.

Up next for UMBC will be next weekend's Lion Invitational at Columbia in New York. The Retrievers play twice on Friday, meeting Columbia (10 a.m.) and Providence (1:30 p.m.).
