BALTIMORE -- Senior Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) tallied 14 kills, and junior Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) notched 12 of her own as the duo once again powered the UMBC offense, this time in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) victory over Winthrop on Saturday morning at The RAC.
The win was the Retrievers' fifth straight and improved their record to 7-2, the best nine-game start since opening 8-1 in 2007.
"One of the things we have lacked in recent years is depth," said Head Coach Ian Blanchard. "This season several different people have come and played really high level volleyball for us coming off the bench. Their ability to do this cannot be overstated."
UMBC hit .266 for the match, but Trendafilova and Mirabella hit .344 and .310, respectively, strong efforts for the second straight day. Mirabella also added three digs, two blocks and an assist in this victory.
Sophomore setter Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) posted 37 assists, five more than the entire Winthrop team. Libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md/Eleanor Roosevelt) also had a strong match, finishing with 20 digs, three assists and two aces.
The visiting Eagles struggled to solve the Retriever defense, hitting only .160 for the match including -.040 in the second set.
UMBC returns to the court at 3 p.m. when it faces Robert Morris in the final match of the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament for both teams.
