BALTIMORE-- Junior Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) and senior Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) combined for 24 kills as the UMBC volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-17 sweep of Morgan State Friday night in front of a rowdy crowd at The RAC.
The win, which improved UMBC to 6-2 overall, came as part of the 8th Annual Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament. Morgan State fell to 0-8 overall, and each team plays two matches on Saturday.
Mirabella registered 13 kills while Trendafilova tallied 11, pacing the UMBC offense. The Retrievers finished with 39 kills overall and a hitting percentage of .265.
"[This] was not our prettiest game, but I liked the way we grinded it out, especially when we found ouselves in a deficit late in that second set," said Head Coach Ian Blanchard. "We made some changes to our lineup...in an effort to get a better look at certain players and specific positions as a coaching staff. That is what the pre-conference season is all about, giving us the opportunity to make some changes, and that provides us with a chance to do some analysis and see how effective the changes were."
Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) stepped in as starting libero and led the defense by contributing 11 digs and two assists.Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Acadmeia Maria Reina) posted a match-high 29 assists, eight more than Morgan State's total as a team.
Brooke Hayden (Mt. Airy/Linganore) also helped out with four kills, five aces plus seven digs.
The Retrievers have a quick turnaround as they face Winthrop at 10 a.m. Saturday. Winthrop rallied from an 0-2 hole and fought off three match points in a five-set victory over Robert Morris in the tournament opener Friday afternoon.
UMBC will wrap up its tournament play with a 3 p.m. match versus Robert Morris. All matches tomorrow, except the 5:30 p.m. finale, can be seen on the live video stream at umbcretrievers.tv.
