Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC volleyball returns to action, hosting the 8th annual Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament at the RAC on Friday and Saturday. Every game of the tournament will be streamed live on umbcretrievers.tv, courtesy of the America East Digital Network, free of charge. UMBC comes into the weekend at 5-2, winners of their last three, having won the Charm City Challenge a week ago.
Maddie Bingaman: The tournament is played in honor of Madison Bingaman, a recruit who was tragically killed in an automobile accident prior to her arrival on campus. The tournament, now in its sixth consecutive year, honors Madison and her family.
SCOUTING UMBC: UMBC heads into the weekend at 5-2, its best record through seven matches since 2008. The Retrievers won last weekend's Charm City Challenge with Sophomore Kristin Watson being named tournament MVP. Senior Zoya Trendafilova and R-Sophomore Claudia Lopez were also named to the all-tournament team.
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE: The Bears enter the weekend at 0-7 aftter dropping three games last weekend at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. MSU was swept by Michigan State and #7 Florida before dropping a four-setter to Central Michigan. Soph. Natahia Barker leads the team with 59 kills.
SCOUTING WINTHROP: The Eagles sits at 3-4 after defeating Georgia Southern in five sets on Monday. WU is paced offensively by sophomore Lourdes Rosario's 99 kills. Sophomore DS Carlie Skelton leads the defense with 93 digs.
SCOUTING ROBERT MORRIS: The Colonials were swept at Kent State on Tuesday evening to lower their record to 4-3. Arden Fish is the offensive catalyst for RMU. The senior has a team-high 83 kills on the young season.
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS: UMBC holds the series lead against two of their three opponents. The Retrievers are 40-2 against Morgan State, 7-7 against Robert Morris, and are 10-0 against Akron. In 2015, UMBC defeated Morgan State and split two matches at Robert Morris. The Retrievers and Winthrop have not faced eachother since being Big South rivals in 1997.
