UMBC Volleyball Take Two Game Win Streak to the RAC Against UMass Lowell on Sunday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC volleyball hosts UMass Lowell for a Sunday matinee this weekend. The Retrievers are riding a two game win streak, and come into the match at 10-11, 4-3 AE on the year.

Last Time Out:

The Retrievers came away with a 3-1 win against Stony Brook last Sunday at the RAC. The Retrievers won the first two sets before falling in the third, but rebounded in the fourth to take the victory.

Freshmen Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) and Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East) led the way with 12 and 11 kills each. Sophomore Marissa Duncan (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) continued her breakout season at the net, rejecting nine Seawolf attacks, the most in a single game for her this year.

Scouting the River Hawks:

UMass Lowell comes into the match at 4-20, 1-6 AE on the year. The River Hawks have lost their last five matches, and fell victim to Stony Brook on Friday, 3-0.

Haley Shimon leads the attack for the River Hawks, having laid down 202 kills this year. She is averaging 2.38 per set, while also recording seven aces and 26 blocks. Delany Mendez and Alexa Toth set up the offense with 348 and 340 assists respectively. Mendez has chipped in on offense as well, laying down 25 kills in 2015.

Last Time vs. UMass Lowell:

Back in early October, the Retrievers travelled up to Lowell, Mass., where UMBC came away with a 3-1 win. UMBC won the first two sets, 25-23, 25-12 before falling 25-22 in the third. The Retrievers closed out the match with a big 25-23 win in the fourth.

A trio of Dawgs hit double figures, with Makenzie Morgen leading the way with 17 kills. Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) added ten, while sophomore Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) added 11 in just her second match of the season.

Freshmen Leading the Way:

Comprising 58% of the Retriever roster, the freshman class has come in and made an immediate impact in 2015. Led by a pair of outside hitters in Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton) and Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest), the Retrievers currently sit in the final spot for the America East Tournament. Both Morgen and Schneider have won America East Rookie of the Week twice. Joining Schneider and Morgen are setter Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) and libero Carola De Jesus (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina).

As a whole, ten of the eleven has seen action this year.

On the Horizon:

UMBC will head on the road for a pair of matches against Binghamton (Friday, Nov. 6) and Albany (Sunday, Nov. 8). The match with the Bearcats is set for 7:00 p.m., while the Great Danes and Retrievers square off at 1:00 p.m.
