UMBC Volleyball Returns Home for Sunday Contest with Stony Brook

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC volleyball hosts the Seawolves on Sunday afternoon at the RAC. The Retrievers are coming off a 3-0 win at Hartford on Sunday. The win against the Hawks moved UMBC to 9-11, 3-3 AE on the year.


Veterans, members of the armed forces, and public safety personnel are invited to enjoy a complimentary UMBC volleyball match with up to three (3) guests. Must show valid veteran, military, or public safety I.D. (Free Mission Barbeque meal pre-game in the All-American Room).

Last Time Out:

The Retrievers got back in the win column with a dominating three set sweep against Hartford last Sunday.

Freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) led the charge with ten kills, adding two digs and three blocks. Fellow freshman Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East) added nine kills and five digs.

Scouting the Seawolves:

Stony Brook comes into the contest with the Retrievers at 10-14, 4-2 AE on the year after winning two non-conference matches this week.

The Seawolves are led by senior Kathy Fletcher, who eclipsed the 300 kill mark this week. Fletcher has 309 kills, averaging 3.59 per set, tops in the America East. Setting the table in Morgan Kath, who has 566 helpers, averaging 9.39 a set.

Last Time vs. Stony Brook:

Earlier this year in September, Stony Brook came away with a 3-0 win up on Long Island. The Retrievers fought hard, but the Seawolves won 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.

Schneider had a team-high nine kills, adding three digs. Sophomore Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) returned to the court in her first action of the season, laying down seven winners and a team best three blocks.

Freshmen Leading the Way:

Comprising 58% of the Retriever roster, the freshman class has come in and made an immediate impact in 2015. Led by a pair of outside hitters in Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton) and Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest), the Retrievers currently sit in the final spot for the America East Tournament. Both Morgen and Schneider have won America East Rookie of the Week twice, with Morgen leading the team with 222 kills. Schneider is right behind her with 168 winners in 20 matches.

Joining Schneider and Morgen are setter Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) and libero Carola De Jesus (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina). Negron is second on the team with 276 assists and 12 aces. De Jesus leads the team with 260 digs, averaging 3.56 per set.

As a whole, ten of the eleven has seen action this year.

On the Horizon:

The Retrievers will continue their home stand against UMass Lowell on Sunday, Nov. 1. The match with the River Hawks is slated for 1:00 p.m.
