West Hartford, Conn.—UMBC volleyball got back in the win column with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-16) win against Hartford on Sunday. Retriever freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) led the way with 10 kills on the day, as UMBC moves to 9-11, 3-3 AE on the year.
The opening set saw the Retrievers jump out ahead 6-1 early on forcing a timeout by the Hawks. However Hartford would respond, pulling to within one. Once more the Retrievers would open up a sizable lead, but the Hawks would have the answer yet again. UMBC would close the set on a 5-0 run, capped by a Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) block to win 25-19.
UMBC came out in the second stanza and dominated from the start. Leading 8-4 early, the Retrievers rattled off a 9-1 run to take a commanding 17-5 lead. Freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) had a pair of kills on the run. Sophomore Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) would end the set on a big kill to win 25-13 and take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The final set saw each side go back and forth exchanging points, but a mini 6-0 run midway through gave the Retrievers the lead for good. The Hawks would try to rally late, but a service ace by Rojas sealed the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
UMBC was led by rookie Maddie Schneider who had 10 kills, hitting .500 for the match. Schneider added three blocks for the Retrievers. Fellow classmate Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East) added nine kills and five digs. Morgen had 22 kills on the weekend.
The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25 when they host Stony Brook. First serve with the Seawolves is set for 1:00 p.m.
