Baltimore, Md.—UMBC volleyball heads north to Lowell, Mass. for a Friday America East matchup against the River Hawks. The Retrievers are coming off a loss to Stony Brook last Friday to open America East play. UMBC sits at 6-9, 0-1 AE on the year.

Last Time Out:

UMBC fell in the America East opener to Stony Brook last Friday, 3-0. The Retrievers were led by freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) who had a team-high nine kills. Schneider added three digs and one block. Sophomore Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) made her first appearance of the season, finishing with seven kills on 11 swings for a hitting percentage of .455. Rojas had three blocks and one ace in the loss.

Scouting the River Hawks (3-13, 0-0 AE):

UMass Lowell enters the match at 3-13 on the year, and are coming off a 3-0 sweep of Bryant on Tuesday. The River Hawks will open their America East schedule on Friday against the Retrievers, after finishing 1-11 in the conference last season.

Hayley Shimon leads the team with 118 kills, averaging 2.19 per set. Shimon has five service aces, 56 digs and 18 total blocks (one solo, 17 assisted) in 2015. A pair of River Hawks have over 200 assists on the year. Alexa Toth leads the team with 230, while Delany Mendez is right behind her with 207. Toth is averaging 4.79 a set, while Mendez averages 4.31 helpers per set.

All-Time Series:

The Retrievers and River Hawks have met four times previous to Friday, with UMBC holding a staunch 4-0 advantage. Last season, the Retrievers won both matches by a combined score of 6-1. The lone dropped set came in the second matchup in Baltimore.

America East Recognition:

Freshmen Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) and Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East) have earned America East Rookie of the Week honors this year, with Schneider also earning player of the week honors. The two rookies lead the team in kills with 106 and 99 respectively.
