Volleyball Opens AE Volleyball Campaign at Stony Brook Friday Evening

The UMBC volleyball team opens its 13th America East Conference season by taking on the Stony Brook Seawolves at Pritchard Gym in Stony Brook, N.Y. on Friday, Sept. 25. UMBC lost a heart-breaking 3-2 decision to visiting La Salle in the Retrievers' final non-conference match-up of the season. The Explorers captured a hard-fought 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 victory. The Retrievers dropped their fourth straight and slipped to 6-8 on the season.

 

Retriever freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan.) led her side with 17 kills and hit .387 on the evening. UMBC freshman Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc.) was the other Retriever with double-figure kills as she posted 12. Classmate and reserve setter Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recorded 37 assists in four sets, while freshman libero Carola De Jesus (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led UMBC with 16 digs.

 

The young UMBC squad fell to0-4 in five-set matches on the campaign.

 

Offensively, the Retrievers are led by Morgen, who has amassed 148 kills (3.02 per set), good for fifth place in America East entering play this week. Four Retrievers have 2.0 kills or higher per set, including Schneider (3.15, fourth in America East), and seniors Krystal Williams (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) (2.32) and Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) (2.15). Walker had tied a team season-best with 20 kills versus William & Mary on Saturday.

 

Three Retrievers have handled setting duties with red-shirt freshman Claudia Lopez leading the way with 216 (6.35 per set, 6th in America East). Lopez posted a season-high 54 helpers in the 3-2 loss to William & Mary on Saturday, but Negron (138, 7.26) saw most of the action in the final four sets versus La Salle.  

 

Sophomore Marissa Duncan and freshman Carola De Jesus  led the defensive effort for UMBC. Duncan has a team-high 48 (0.89) blocks, while De Jesus has dug out 170 (3.4) balls to lead the squad.

 

A Glance at the Seawolves:  The Stony Brook volleyball team hit a season-high .379 on its way to a sweep of in-state foe Fordham (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) Tuesday night at Rose Hill Gym. With the victory, the Seawolves improved to 4-12.

UMBC defeated Fordham by the same 3-0 count on Sept. 11.

Reigning America East Rookie of the Week Morgan Kath had 34 assists in the win. Kath has recorded 10.67 assists per set over her last four matches. Seniors Stephanie McFadden  and Kathy Fletcher each added nine kills. Fletcher leads the squad with 3.25 kills per set.

 

All-Time Series: This will be the 26th all-time meeting between the two schools. Stony Brook holds a slim 14-11 advantage over the Retrievers, including a sweep of the two matches in 2014. SBU has won the last three matches after the Retrievers posted three consecutive victories. UMBC is 3-9 in 12 matches on Long Island.
