Baltimore, Md.—UMBC volleyball dropped their home opener, 3-1 to Howard on Tuesday. Freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) paced the offense with 18 kills adding ten digs for a double-double.
The opening set saw the Retrievers (3-4) fall behind a couple times early, but each time dug themselves out of it. UMBC cut it to an 11-9 Howard lead following a Schneider kill, and took a 13-12 lead on an attack error. The rest of the set would go back and forth, with the Retrievers winning the last three points of the set to win 31-29.
UMBC raced ahead early in the second stanza, taking a 5-1 lead thanks to kills by Schneider and fellow classmate Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton). However, it was Howard who went on a run to take an 18-15 lead, forcing Coach Blanchard to call timeout. The Bison (2-7) would hold on the rest of the set winning 25-20, tying the match heading to the intermission.
Howard would come out in the third and hold a lead early, but Retrievers kept clawing their way back, eventually taking a 21-20 lead after a big rally ended with a Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) block. The Bison however would win the final three points to end the set with a 27-25 win. The final set saw the Bison take control early and not look back. Howard went on an 8-0 run to make it 22-11, and held on to win the set 25-14, and the match 3-1.
Schneider recorded a double-double with 18 kills and ten digs. Morgen and Krystal Williams (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) had nine kills each. Senior Paige Miller (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) chipped in 28 assists for the Retrievers.
