Storrs, Conn.—Senior Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) led the charge with five kills, as UConn defeated the Retrievers, 3-0 on Friday night. The loss drops UMBC to 2-3 on the year.
The opening set saw the Huskies jump out early, taking a 6-1 lead forcing a Retriever timeout. From there, UConn would go on a 15-0 run to take a 15-1 lead. Senior Sherelle Walker would end the run with a kill. The Huskies would give up just six more points, taking a 25-8 win in set one.
Set two saw much of the same, as the Huskies jumped out in front 7-3 early on. The Retrievers would fight back cutting the deficit to three a couple of times, but UConn would go on a run to force a UMBC timeout up 11-5. Later in the set, Walker would lay down back-to-back kills, followed by an attack error to make it 19-14 Huskies. UConn would win six of the last eight points to win the set 25-16, taking a 2-0 lead.
In the final set, UMBC got out ahead 4-2 early. However the Huskies would claw back to tie the set at 6-6. The set would go back and forth with each team exchanging points. UConn would push ahead 18-11 after a 5-0 run, and that would prove to be all they needed, as they held on to win 25-14.
Walker led the Retrievers with five kills, adding two blocks and one dig. Classmate Krystal Williams (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) added four kills. Redshirt freshman Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) led with nine assists.
"It was just one of those matches where not much went the way we would have liked. The most important thing now, is how we will respond to a match like this," Head Coach Ian Blanchard said.
The Retrievers will close out the UConn Dog Pound Challenge tomorrow against Bryant. First serve with the Bulldogs is set for 11:00 a.m.
