Moon Township, Pa.—UMBC volleyball picked up a 3-0 season opening win against the Colonials on Friday night. Freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs.
The opening set went back and forth to start, until a trio of errors gave UMBC a 12-9 lead. The Retrievers stretched their lead to 23-16 after back to back kills from Schneider and Liz Pronove (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community). UMBC would win the set 25-21 after a service error, to take a 1-0 lead.
Set two was much like the first, with a run midway through, led by kills from Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Krystal Willams (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) stretched the lead to 12-8. Williams would get the final kill of the set, closing out the set with a 25-18 win.
Robert Morris (0-1) fought hard in the third set, taking an early 8-5 lead after miscues by the Retrievers. Williams had back to back kills to put UMBC ahead 12-11. UMBC and Robert Morris would battle back and forth, but the Retrievers scored six of the final eight points in the set to win 25-23 and take the match, 3-0.
Schneider finished her first collegiate match with 17 kills and 11 digs. She added two service aces and one block. Williams had ten kills and three digs in the match. Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) and Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) each had double digit assists, with 17 and 13 respectively.
The Retrievers return to action tomorrow, August 29 with a pair of matches. UMBC takes on local-rival Loyola (Md.) at 11:00 a.m. and Robert Morris at 2:30 p.m.
